Prehab and Physio

Pre-operative rehabilitation (prehab) refers to a program of physical exercises and activities designed to improve the strength, flexibility, and overall fitness of a patient before undergoing surgery. The goal of prehab is to optimize the patient's physical condition to reduce the risk of complications during and after surgery, accelerate recovery, and enhance the overall outcome of the surgical procedure.

How Physiotherapy Can Help in Pre-Operative Rehab:

  1. Strengthening Muscles:

    • Physiotherapists design exercise programs to strengthen the muscles around the surgical area. For example, if you're undergoing knee surgery, exercises will focus on strengthening the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles. Stronger muscles provide better support for the joint post-surgery.

  2. Improving Range of Motion:

    • Exercises aimed at improving flexibility and joint range of motion can help prepare the body for surgery and make post-operative rehabilitation smoother. This is particularly important in surgeries involving joints, like knee or shoulder replacements.

  3. Cardiovascular Fitness:

    • Cardiovascular exercises, such as walking or cycling, may be included to improve overall fitness. Better cardiovascular health can contribute to faster recovery and reduce the risk of post-surgical complications like deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

  4. Education on Post-Operative Care:

    • Physiotherapists often educate patients on what to expect after surgery, including how to use mobility aids (like crutches or walkers), and how to perform exercises that will be necessary post-surgery. This education can make the transition to post-operative rehab smoother.

  5. Pain Management:

    • Techniques such as manual therapy, massage, and other modalities (like ultrasound or TENS) may be used to manage pain or discomfort before surgery, which can help improve your ability to participate in the prehab program.

  6. Mental Preparation:

    • The process of prehab can also help with mental preparation for surgery. Knowing that you're doing everything you can to improve your surgical outcome can reduce anxiety and improve overall mental well-being.

Benefits of Pre-Operative Rehab:

  • Faster Recovery: Patients who engage in prehab often experience a faster and smoother recovery.

  • Reduced Post-Operative Pain: Strengthening and conditioning the body before surgery can lead to less post-operative pain.

  • Lower Risk of Complications: Better physical conditioning can reduce the risk of complications such as infections, blood clots, or prolonged hospital stays.

  • Improved Surgical Outcomes: Overall, patients tend to have better outcomes, including better function and mobility, when they undergo pre-operative rehab.

Pre-operative rehabilitation is highly individualized, and a physiotherapist will tailor the program to your specific needs, taking into account the type of surgery you're having, your current physical condition, and any other health considerations.
